Present Situation
Korea, comprising a total area of 223,705 sq. km and a population of 77,136,038 (estimated 2022), was occupied and divided into two zones as a result of a war, which began on June 25, 1950, and lasted until an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953.
Zone I: The South Koreans formed the Republic of Korea in May 1948, with Seoul as the capital. The republic was formally proclaimed on August 15, 1948.
Zone II: The North Koreans formed the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in May 1948, with Pyongyang as the capital. North Korea -DPRK was formally proclaimed on September 9, 1948.
